【Bobiverse #5:Not Till We are Lost】 by Dennis E. Taylor, 2024

Bobiverse is back! The fourth book was released in 2020, and I finished it in 2021. Man, I've been waiting for this for over three years! So many character and species names I almost forgot. Luckily, I’ve relied on fans’ wikis to fill me in 😅 At least my interest in this isn’t too niche in the English-speaking world.
This time, the main plot revolves around Super Quality AI and the Fermi Paradox, with some side exploration of new species and ongoing conflicts between factions of humans, also counting in host-humans. The author clearly doesn’t want to spend much time on these last two elements, he just want to wrap them up quickly. So, they’re cautiously using the Bobs’ AHI advantage to outsmart and defeat other intelligent beings.
In terms of intelligence forms, if we use Nick Bostrom’s 2014 book 《Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies》 as a rough guide, AI can be categorized into three types: Speed intelligence, Networked collective intelligence, and Quality intelligence. As individuals, the Bobs have already achieved Human+Speed intelligence. The entire Bobiverse could be seen as a Networked collective intelligence, but even they can’t solve ultimate mysteries like how to achieve human immortality, faster-than-light travel, antimatter discovery, or the Fermi Paradox. So, it makes sense that some Bobs want to develop Quality intelligence transcends human level. And of course, humans are sure that systems created by human intelligence will easily contain and control AI that surpasses it, right? 😆 Yeah, everything went to shit lol.
This installment also finds the Fermi Paradox answer within the Bobiverse’s galaxy, using the common Drake equation as a reference—intelligent life is rare but shouldn’t be entirely absent. In the Bobiverse, finding other intelligent life in a single galactic arm isn’t too difficult, so where did everyone go? Thinking both in terms of human activity and natural disasters, the answer might be simple, and this book gives it at the end. No surprise, the next installment will likely focus on solving this ultimate question.
All in all, as someone who was patiently waiting for this long-awaited sequel, my expectations weren’t too high—and honestly, it’s pretty solid. It doesn’t have the same lengthy or overly focused single-plot issues that plagued the fourth book, nor does it drag on. Even though it doesn’t reach the tight, high-density storytelling level of books 1~3, which I still prefer, this one isn’t bad. Better than just canceling the series! Maybe my standards have just grown over the years… or perhaps my expectations were too high from the start.
IMO Rating: 74. A solid return after a long absence with balanced main and side plotlines.
