Another award-winning, low sci-fi content "farce". It's a bit of a stretch to call this one sci-fi at all. Its essence is more of a "comedic take on Star Wars style stormtroopers in space operas," and calling it sci-fi? The only thing that is sci-fi in the story is the setting, nothing more.
I approached this book with similar expectations as when I first opened 《Murderbot》 and 《Klara and the Sun》: it’s got multiple sci-fi literary awards, is well-known, so it shouldn’t be bad, right? But after reading it, my initial thought was, this is more of a fantasy comedy than sci-fi, isn’t it? It’s not bad to read, but it’s light-years away from what I expected.
Imagine having watched some of the 《Star Wars》franchise, only to find yourself suddenly on the Enterprise, wearing red (meaning you’re just a background character who dies first in an emergency). Should I cling onto the main characters for dear life or stay as far away as possible to avoid getting caught up in dangerous ground missions? How can I break out of this cycle? It’s all about watching the main characters dodge and weave, trying to not be a dead background player.
But ultimately, this really doesn’t feel like sci-fi at all. The award wins don’t quite match the content. A bit disappointed.
IMO Rating: 51. Honestly, it’s a pretty solid comedy novel, but since I’m evaluating it as sci-fi rather than comedy, it feels like an average piece in that category.
