"Last long enough, and you'll see that they're all our people. The fuckers? I'm telling you they're us too." - Chrisjen Avasarala

"Last long enough, and you'll see that they're all our people. The fuckers? I'm telling you they're us too." - Chrisjen Avasarala

After barely surviving the Free Navy Conflict and enjoying decades of peace, the Rocinante crew, who are about to move on to the next phase of their lives, find themselves facing the rise of an empire that shakes the entire human civilization. Everything they know is turned upside down. The difference this time is that the power gap is huge, and the enemy cannot be defeated. In a situation where winning the war is impossible, should they even try to win individual battles? Even though the opponent is seemingly invincible, they are still human and have vulnerabilities. Can delaying tactics create opportunities? Or is it all in vain? Moreover, force can make people outwardly comply with actions, but can it suppress their desire to express their thoughts freely? How should one manage those who have not surrendered inwardly even after being defeated?

In terms of plot, I appreciate how past sworn enemies unite against a common formidable enemy, holding onto hope and working together despite the despair. It's fresh coming off the internal struggles in 《Three Body Problem》. What’s more amusing is how smooth the old OPA members execute their missions, especially with an accomplice from their own side who's been planting all sorts of tricks inside and outside Medina Station. With just a basic sensor, wouldn't they be exposed? And considering that AGI should already exist by now, it seems like everything they do would soon be discovered. It appears that Laconia’s security protocols are severely lacking. In a situation where the occupying force is stretched thin and local personnel cannot be fully trusted, the key problem to solve would be implementing maximum surveillance with minimal manpower. Wouldn’t gradually installing monitoring equipment and strengthening control over information go a long way in preventing uprisings?

As for the scientific plausibility… well, it’s debatable 😓 After all, both sides are still figuring out each other’s tech tree.

The question of whether humanity should be ruled by an empire is intriguing. In my view, during a short-term state of emergency without considering the transitional costs, if leadership decisions are mostly correct (but who decides what correctness entails?), an empire could guide civilization toward "prosperity." However, cultural "flourishing" isn't achievable through an imperial structure. It would significantly impact diversity across various fields.

All in all, this episode is a mixed bag for me. I love the big picture of the plot but have some issues with its smaller details and scientific plausibility.

Only two volumes left to complete the series!

IMO Rating: 71. The episode has some story and plausibility issues, but I like the direction of the plot.
