【Bobiverse #3:All These Worlds】 by Dennis E. Taylor, 2017

Dennis Taylor

Are Bobs, these replicated human conscious, still considered human? Are they subject to human laws? When time passes and their kins no longer exist or become so thin, is it necessary to not let go of the past or maintain respect with the humanity who competes for resources, or even interfere in wars between humanities? Giving humanity the choice to join AHI ranks, can it ease the foreseeable distant conflicts? How to resolve trust issues between both sides? I love that Dennis starts drawing these kinds of political topics in this book.

This episode marks a significant shift in the relationship between humans and AHI. Despite differences in wealth, intelligence, and adaptability, the lines between them are beginning to blur, and this episode is filled with intense space battle actions!

The "liberal movement" among Bobs — no longer closely monitoring or serving the endangered human civilizations to do whatever they desire, combined with replicative drift making individual differences more extreme. Though it seems like a straightforward progression of the story, reading it doesn't bring that boring feeling of being too predictable. Somehow Dennis can still keep me eagerly anticipating future developments. In my own perception, this episode feels like another peak after the first one, largely due to Dennis's comedic writing style and narrative techniques. Multiple events happen simultaneously in different locations, yet the timeline never feels confusing; the amount of plot progression is much grander than the second episode as well, packed into one volume without feeling rushed or shallow — a real achievement.

However, in terms of settings, sci-fi black magics have started to emerge again (infinite energy out of nowhere but with limited output called Casimir generator.) Although these are reverse-engineered alien techs, it does feel like at this stage, when the number of replicated individuals reaches a certain level and their networks being so vast, it's inevitable that some advanced tech should start showing up. To move further, there needs to be some breakthroughs; otherwise, progress within a reasonable timeframe would drag on too long. That said, it still seems hand-wavy nonetheless.

And finally, Dennis Taylor has finally mastered endings in this third episode! It feels like his writing style has made a significant leap forward in this one.

IMO Rating: 88. The most outstanding sequel in the Bobiverse series so far!
