📚心得【怒月】|《The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress 》 by Robert Heinlein, 1966
(To make a mistake is human, but to really fuck things up, you need a computer connected to everything.),更可疑的是這個AI有意識與人格卻只有主角知道,且出問題只有主角「修得好」,管理系統的工程師團隊也太混太天真 😅

《The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress 》 is a classic I read after finishing Andy Weir's 《The Martian》, but from a modern perspective, many of its concepts feel outdated and questionable.
In the story, Luna is compared to Australia: a new frontier, yet used for exiling convicts and agriculture. Despite being an extremely costly lunar city to build, tourism, high-pollution industries, manufacturing, and research facilities aren't its main purposes. Instead, they send over criminals who can't easily return to Earth due to gravity adaptation issues. Yet, this setup only gives the criminals opportunities to seize control of lunar facilities and resources. Guess it isn't a good idea lol.
Having an AI manage the entire city's public infrastructure is already suspicious (quote, "To make a mistake is human, but to really mess things up, you need a computer connected to everything."), and it gets even weirder. This AI has consciousness and personality but only the main character knows about it. Plus, fixing the system only falls on the protagonist, while the engineering team overseeing it seems clueless and naive. Is this AHI in love with the protagonist? I think it only makes sense if that's the case.
Another thing that doesn't make sense to me is, construction of the second secretly-built mass driver track should have been a large-scale project. Even if Earth couldn't observe the construction from orbit, the massive shipments of heat-resistant and superconducting materials would raise some eyebrows.
During the final battle, it's baffling why Earth's military doesn't just bomb Luna from orbit. Instead, they insists on landing without any preparation, with troops totally unprepared for lunar gravity. The whole operation feels like it's led by infants — so naive it's unbelievable the Earth government doesn't collapse on its own.
With oxygen, silica, iron, magnesium, aluminum, and calcium available on the moon, if these raw materials can't be processed into high-value industrial products locally, and waste water and exhaust gas can just be dumped into the uninhabited, high-radiation lunar surface, no one would invest in building a city there just for those common minerals. To me, it would only make sense as a tourist and research hub, like in Andy Weir's 《Artemis》.
IMO Rating: 61. Despite being called a classic, it still feels too naive for me.
