📚心得【戰爭遊戲】|Review《Ender's Game 》 by Orson Scott Card, 1985

"The moment I truly understood my enemy, the moment I knew them well enough to defeat them, was the moment I also loved them. It was at that same moment, when I came to love them, that I had to destroy them."

"I will make sure they can never harm us again. I will torment them endlessly until they no longer exist."

I assume most are familiar with this work. It was adapted into a movie in 2013, which wasn't bad in terms of box office performance. The reason I chose to read it now was mainly because I saw it on Goodreads' list of 20th-century sci-fi classics. I figured that, as is often the case with movie adaptations, many details and subplots would likely be omitted, so I thought it would be worthwhile to read the original myself.

My immediate reaction after finishing the book was: The movie has defiled the original novel.

I can't blame the young actors, but in the original work, Ender is seen by others as a bloodthirsty genius monster of a human child in the eyes of his peers, a young savior who must be tormented by his teachers, a mirror image to his blood siblings, and a weary lone wolf in his own eyes. This rich psychological imagery wasn't conveyed through acting. The protagonist's journey of questioning his identity — whether he is a child, soldier, victim, commander, savior, or fascist exterminator of an entire species — was greatly condensed. Honestly, it's such a pity that this outstanding original work felt mishandled.

This story focuses heavily on the protagonist's training and interactions with his peers and instructors, as well as the comparison between human individual thought and insect hive-mind mentality in terms of evolutionary advantages. While the war and games do take up significant portions, they feel like a maze designed for the protagonist to navigate, where he just needs to know how to reach the end rather than caring about the maze itself.

Frankly speaking, this work doesn't fall under hard sci-fi, especially in its latter half when it introduces Xenotech with elements like artificial gravity, undisturbable FTL instant communication, molecular lasers (called "Little Doctor"), and more. These elements inadvertently open up potential options for even more destructive concepts like artificial black holes, time machines, and Star Killers, making it all too easy to annihilate ourselves as well — a direction I'm not particularly satisfied with in terms of worldbuilding.

IMO Rating: 77. A work that carefully balances story and character development but falters somewhat on the scientific aspects. Still an outstanding piece despite its softer sci-fi elements.
