📚心得【童年末日】｜Review《Childhood's End 》 by Arthur C. Clarke, 1953

《童年末日》在我心中一直有個神奇的地位，明明是1953年的軟科幻小說，以21世紀的觀點去看卻有著說不上來的寫實感：那麼多種娛樂方式，每天都有數千小時的content被產出，即使你不吃不喝不睡，也吸收不盡所有娛樂，人類都逐漸變成海綿，只會吸收、不會創造。

整個故事簡單來說，就是有個自稱「主宰」的種族降臨地球，貌似無償為地球人帶來完美無缺、天堂般的Utopia生活，也不在意被部分地球人惡意攻擊，世上再也沒有戰爭、貧窮與疾病；當人類完全信任主宰後，就逐漸墮落，少數仍在反抗者也被冠上不理性標籤而被孤立，卻不知道主宰只是在拖時間，讓真正的幕後黑手達成目的…

看過這部作品後再跑去看另一部由Octavia E. Butler所寫的軟科幻《Lilith's Brood》，可以感覺得出來有受到不少《童年末日》的啟發，但整體故事品質與量都更勝《童年末日》，喜歡「善意侵略與統治」的推薦看看這兩部作品。

"It won’t be long before humans no longer live their own lives."

《Childhood's End》 has always held a magical place in my heart. Despite being a soft sci-fi novel from 1953, it feels eerily realistic when viewed through the lens of the 21st century: so many forms of entertainment, with thousands of hours of content produced every day, leaving you unable to absorb it all even if you stop eating, drinking, or sleeping. Humans are gradually turning into sponges, only absorbing and not creating.

In simple terms, the story revolves around a race that calls themselves "Masters" who descend upon Earth, seemingly selflessly bringing humanity a perfect, utopian paradise. They don't seem to mind being maliciously attacked by some humans; tradegies such as war, poverty, and disease all become extinct. After humans fully trust the Masters, they begin falling into hedonism while those minors who still rebel occasionally labeled as irrational and further isolated, totally unaware that the Masters are just biding their time while the true masterminds behind everything work towards their goal...

After reading this work, when you go on to read Octavia E. Butler's soft sci-fi novel 《Lilith's Brood》, you can definitely feel its inspiration from 《Childhood's End》. However, I think overall 《Lilith's Brood》 surpasses this one in content quality and quantity. If you're interested in "alien benign invasion and rule," definitely check out both of these works.
