📚心得【Old Man's War 垂暮戰爭】 by John Scalzi, 2005

If joining the military could give you a young body, would you be willing? At 75 years old and wanting to feel alive again, the "young" protagonist enlists military, bringing the life perspective of an elder viewing peace and war, life and death. What would that look like? While people hope for peace on one hand, as a small fry in the military, should one face reality and realize that as an individual, you just can't make a difference?
This story reminds me of Marvel's《Captain America》+ Joe Haldeman's《The Forever War》. The protagonist's first life isn't special in any way — like other elderly soldiers who join the colonial military not because they want to die but because their bodies are getting old. In exchange for a second chance at life, the cost is steep: within 10 years, you must fight and possibly die for humanity.
The main storyline is straightforward (in a derogatory sense), progressing in a linear fashion through one battle after another. The protagonist narrowly escapes death time and again, while friends bite the dust one by one. Finally, they complete their mission in a critical battle, but the process doesn't overly burden the protagonist with plot armor being too thick.
To me, the most interesting aspects of this book lie in the physical reconstruction, individual weapons, and the ideological differences between old soldiers and young recruits, as well as the contrasting reflexes. The mass-produced MP-35 infantry rifle paired with BCI's potential feels limitless, almost to the point of being overkill; unfortunately, the plot and worldbuilding don't reach the same level as these fascinating details.
IMO Rating: 68. A mid-higher work with a straightforward storyline, excellent details, and interesting views.
