This is a short novel I used to follow on Reddit years ago. Recently, Dust on YouTube decided to help them create an audiobook podcast, so I watched it again. Looking back now, this is still the best novella I've ever read on r/HFY (about 204 pages).

You can directly download an epub file there. The English part isn't too difficult; I highly recommend it for sci-fi newcomers.
I won't spoil too much, but this work features the most incredible, powerful, and convincing "tough talks" I've ever seen. It can bring a machine of revenge filled with sadness, anger, hatred, and the abandonment of all positive beliefs back to the right path. Some classic lines are as impactful as those in the anime 《Gurren Lagann》, spanning past, present, and future, explaining how to let go of hatred — even when you yourself cannot.
The science isn't overly rigorous. The protagonist starts with lower-level technology but gradually reverse-engineers advanced tech like warp drives and FTL communication by plundering. To say it's cheating is spot-on, but given the overwhelmingly powerful enemies they face, the story wouldn't even get off the ground without such cheats.
Based on my simple scoring standards, giving this work such a high score isn't very fair to other masterpieces, but that's the charm of novellas: concise, no wasted time in telling unnecessary stories or developing secondary characters, straight-up delivering an outstanding main storyline. You can finish it within days, and now there's also a free audiobook on YouTube — truly generous of the author 🙏
IMO Rating: 87. A masterpiece where the protagonist gradually goes mad but manages an incredible good ending.
