"Weakness and ignorance are not barriers to survival. Arrogance is."

"The greatest respect for a civilization is to annihilate it completely."

If the entire universe is an ecosystem of intelligent life, and according to game theory, this ecosystem is fundamentally "selfish" both theoretically and practically, how can a species survive within such an ecosystem?

When every side has the potential to press a nuclear button, yet no one can observe the others' moves, how can communication even begin?

The logic here is similar to Cold War diplomacy: The weaker side will be gradually worn down, while the side willing to act ruthlessly and abandon face tends to gain more concessions in negotiations. Once the other party realizes that you won't or can't press the nuclear button at a critical moment, they might as well pull out a gun from under the table — maybe a bullet is already in the air.

In the book, ants are used as an example: after countless generations of evolution, ants finally realize their world is no more than a gravestone to humans; and after countless generations, humanity realizes that the universe itself isn't "natural" — everywhere could be filled with traces and fingerprints of other species.

Many consider the third volume to be the best, but I don't quite agree. Some characters' thoughts and actions are hard for me to empathize with or understand, and the final half of the story feels overly exaggerated, pushing it toward realms of fancy. Plus, there are several fable-like fragments, making the reading experience a bit disjointed.

That said, the hypothesis that "life shapes the universe" is fascinating — can't help being mind-blown.

IMO Rating: 83. A masterpiece with its flaws, throwing readers through various despairs and wonders.
