You know, people might not even realize they've already lost the race for survival before they've had a chance to observe or comprehend the enemy.

Physics is an experimental science—observing and analyzing natural phenomena to uncover patterns. But what happens when we start realizing that these phenomena aren't "natural" but rather man-made? Does "science" still qualify as science?

The Three-Body Trilogy is the first Chinese-language series by a writer to win a Nebula Award for Best Novel. The author often gets criticized for weak character development—characters feel more like personifications of ideas and positions than real people. There's also the heavy-handed fascist, communist, and nationalist themes, along with plenty of stereotypes, all reflected in the work. Some scenes do lean heavily toward being politically incorrect or even seem to copy elements from Killing Stars , a 1995 collaboration between Charles Pellegrino and George Zebrowski. But when it comes to core ideas and logical paradoxes, this series delivers for real.

The first book references a lot of events from the Cultural Revolution and draws parallels with Silent Spring 's overly idealistic view of communism, which remains unattainable. This leads to the conclusion that "humans are fundamentally flawed at our DNA level," echoing Christian ideas of original sin.

Unfortunately, the first book spends 80% of its pages using a VR-style metaphor to describe past events, and this approach feels clunky. Honestly, for a series, it's not the strongest opener. But the second and third books are fantastic—so if you can get through the first one, it’s worth it.

Like a lot of sci-fi, The Three-Body Trilogy focuses on the tension between "human nature" and "the survival of the fittest". Rationality and emotion are always at odds. These two sides seem incompatible, which is why people have "belief": Even if reason tells you there's only a 1% chance of success, humans will cling to that sliver of hope and keep moving forward.

There were rumors before the pandemic about The Three-Body Trilogy being adapted into a movie or anime, but nothing came of it—it just dropped some short PVs and went silent. There were also reports that Netflix was interested but got blocked by the Chinese government. Hopefully, it can be made into a TV series or movie someday so more people can appreciate how deep this sci-fi is.

IMO Rating: 74. A decent start for the dark trilogy, but this is just the beginning.
