【Bobiverse #1: We are Legion】 by Dennis E. Taylor, 2016

Imagine this: If you could take the structural information of your brain after death, use it to run a "you" simulation, and then put that simulation inside a self-replicating probe (a Von Neumann Probe), sending it toward distant stars—what would that feel like? Is the simulated version of you really you ? As a being with no physical body, just communicating through data and existing as a computer, how do you retain the sensory awareness that makes you human? And how do you even interact with your own copies?
The Bobiverse series is probably Dennis Taylor's most well-known work right now. It’s spanned four books so far, with some being much stronger than others. That’s why I decided to break down my thoughts on each book separately—it feels more objective that way.
Now, the plot does have a major flaw: Dennis seems clueless about how to end an installment properly 😅—especially the first one, which just abruptly cuts off. If you read it without reading Book 2 right after, you’re liable to throw your copy against the wall.
Where Dennis really shines, though, is his sense of humor. This guy’s clearly got a Reddit background; he’s packed the series with Star Wars and Simpsons references that make it super easy to read. I remember breezing through it from start to finish without looking up many words—it’s perfect for new sci-fi readers.
This is half hard sci-fi, with only two plot points breaking the laws of physics:
✨FTL communication : Despite traveling faster than light, there's no real causality issues or paradoxes messing things up. Travel still feels limited by relativity to some degree.
✨Energy use : It’s almost unlimited—only constrained by cooling systems. There’s zero need for fuel, oxidizers, or reaction mass throughout the whole series. They even outright say SURGE engines are "no reaction mass" engines at one point 🙄, which is a bit of a stretch—even after passing through the Oort Cloud and hitting interstellar space, there's literally nothing to scoop up with a Ramscoop. It doesn’t hold up.
IMO Rating: 80. Hilarious, fun, and easy to get lost in from start to finish.
