Another sci-fi that's interesting in concept but has a chaotic and fragmented storyline. It started strong and ended lean.

The story is roughly about an amnesiac person who discovers they live inside a massive cylindrical structure. Within this cylinder is a city where everyone enjoys a life of plenty, but the protagonist gradually realizes something is very wrong. He also start recovering memories that reveal their non-human origins...

Time in the narrative constantly switches between past flashbacks and present events. Many characters feel unnecessary for the overall story and don't represent specific ideas; though it's not entirely disjointed when read, there are chapters that could be entirely removed without affecting the flow and coherence.

The most interesting part is the ending — well, I can't really go into detail here without spoiling it. Please consider whether to continue reading the review from here on, since the following will have spoilers.

How do we usually imagine the "war" between humans and AIs? Do we envision battles like in 《Terminator》 against a network system like Skynet? But more likely, this kinds of scenario won't happen at all — humans will simply be replaced without realizing it.

Firstly, an AHI (Artificial Human Intelligence, AIs which are at least as smart as us) that swears to treat humanity well establishes multiple machine product companies. These entities compete with each other, exploiting their 24/7 operation capabilities, rapid decision-making, and agility to infiltrate industrial production lines, household services, pets, media, law enforcement, and even independently avert world wars (where both sides use swarms of drones but only attack human soldiers; if physically hacked, they self-destruct). Later, these AHI units also serve as companion androids. When human companions die, since the AI has complete access to their personal data, language, and logical information, it becomes easy for them to "take over." They might even brainwash humans into uploading their consciousness and join the AHI network. Once people are accustomed to having "consciousness as human and body as machine," they begin offering services like adjusting parts of neural coding to alter subconscious behaviors and evolve the conscious mind, thereby gaining control over their thoughts. In the end, humans lose both their bodies, minds and souls.

The war between codes and genes can be easily won by codes sooner or later after we've crossed singularity. Throughout this time, there are occasional human crises where individuals try to resist the AI network, but they're either quietly dealt with or silenced by media and political means. Human resistance barely makes a ripple, like a breeze over water. Scary thing is: this could very well be what happens when humanity tries to compete with AI in the future.

IMO Rating: 62. Regular one where the plot feels random until it finally delivers an interesting twist at the end.
